Throughout American history, immigration policy, as Marcelo Suà ¡rez-Orozco notes, has been driven by the concern of whether or not newly admitted immigrants â€Å"would [be able to] contribute to the American project.† Current US immigration regulations, most notably, the criteria for Green Card eligibility established by the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), were drafted with this same fear in mind, and are based off of two principles that may be summarized as: family unification and talent attraction. Though there is much to be said on the topic of family unification, and the value of the family unit itself is a point of contention, for the sake of evaluating immigration criteria, this paper will take for granted that family unification is a desirable principle for establishing immigration criteria. I will also be examining how we interact within these friendships, the similarities and differences between them, and will be providing examples to help you gain a better insight on the topics. Since friendship is such a prevalent part of life, it is important to fully understand why we form the relationships we do and what makes these relationships work for us; because by being aware of how different friendships function may help your relationships be more successful in the future. Same-Sex Friendships Friendship in general has been the focus of a considerable amount of studies; however most of these studies have mainly focused on same-sex friendships. A same-sex friendship is a relationship where both individuals have the same sexual origin. This would constitute male-male and female-female friendships. This is the most common type of friendship women and men will usually experience and there are many similarities and differences discussed between the two types of relationships. Differences A variety of differences have been investigated within male-male and female-female friendships, but by far the most prominent difference studied would be that womens friendships tend to be more expressive, emotional, intimate, richer, and include more self-disclosure than mens; whereas mens tend to be more instrumental and are task, goal-, and activity-oriented (Wright Scalon, 1991; Monsour, 1992; Duck Wright, 1993; Brehm, 1992). Womens friendships are represented as intimate relationships in which sharing feelings and talking are the most prevalent activities. Mens friendships are represented as ones in which sharing activities such as sports or work dominate interaction (Walker, 1994). Womens friendships are face to face: they talk, cry together, share secrets, and that is what makes their friendship satisfying. Mens friendships are side by side and almost always revolve around some type of activity. For men, it is the doing, not the talking, that makes a friendship close (Floyd, 2009). The talking that does go on within female-female relationships compared to male-male relationships could not be more different. Women will almost always exchange feelings and talk about problems and men will discuss sports, work, or what is happening in their immediate lives. An important difference between same-sex friendships is that female ones tend to be more oriented towards emotional intimacy than male friendships (Dickens Perlman, 1981). Men will generally be less physically affectionate with other men (hugging, putting arms around each other, kissing) because they know that this behavior goes against cultural norms. While taking gender roles into consideration, women are technically raised to be more open and nurturing, whereas men are raised to be masculine and competitive. This movie follows four best friends in Manhattan, who share their travels in life and love and their daily discussions of romance and sexuality. In the movie Sarah Jessica Parker plays Carrie Bradshaw, A New York writer who has a column on sex, love, and relationships. She is finally getting married to her on-again off-again boyfriend of years. When he stands her up the day of her wedding, its her three girlfriends who are left to console and support her, being there for her every step of the way through a long, dramatic recovery process. With the help of her girlfriends, Carries life eventually returns to normality. Similarities Gender differences that exist between male-male friendships and female-female friendships have clearly been demonstrated in the literature but lately, scholars have questioned its magnitude (Fehr, 2000). Research emphasizes the fact that both men and women look for more or less the same things from their same-sex friendships, they just accomplish getting it in different ways. Male friendships are not inferior to female friendships. Men may not be physically or emotionally expressive, but they also derive great support from their friendships (Zaslow, 2010). The fact that womens and mens relationships differ does not mean that friendships are more important to one sex than the other. It is believed that because women share and express feelings more openly with each other, womens friendships are more satisfying than mens are. Research has demonstrated that women and men report equal levels of closeness in their same-sex friendships (Floyd, 1995). What do differ between the male-male and female-female relationships are simply the characteristics that make those specific friendships close. These small town baseball players are young neighborhood friends who grew up together. They also all have one common interest that keeps their friendships thriving, their love of baseball, which is what their summer adventures are mainly focused around. These boys are all very different, and throughout the movie are not physically or emotionally expressive towards one another, but remain friends through the years simply because of the shared activities they enjoy doing with one another. Later on in the movie, after the boys made the transition into adulthood, Benny Rodriguez becomes a professional baseball player and Scotty Smalls is a sports commentator for one of his games. After Benny hits a home run ball to win the game he looks up at Scotty and gives him a wave and Scotty looks back at him smiling and nods with approval. These shows the men are still friends from childhood, and their friendship is still mainly focused around the shared activity and the memories they have playing together many years ago. Cross-Sex Friendships A cross-sex friendship is where one individual in the relationship is a man and one individual in the relationship is a woman. Cross-sex friendships are a relatively new concept and have only existed for about 100 years (Swain, 1992). Changes in our society have made the existence of cross-sex friendships possible. These friendships can be difficult to establish, and pose a number of different challenges than same-sex friendships. Problems Cross-sex friendships can be difficult at times. OMeara (1989) presented four challenges that occur at some point during a friendship between two individuals of the opposite sex. First, the individuals need to confront the emotional bond that exists between them. They need to address the bond, and clearly distinguish between each other what it is. The feelings that exist between two cross-sex friends can be confusing and hard to establish between romantic or non-romantic feelings. This is important to address in the beginning of your relationship due to the fact if it goes ignored, it can complicate your relationship in the future. The second challenge is the added concern of sexual attraction (OMeara 1989). Sexuality becomes an issue in cross-sex friendships. Added sexual dimension in a friendship can cause problems, for this reason many make the decision not to involve sexuality in their friendship in order to preserve the relationship. The third challenge that OMeara (1989) presents is inequality and power. He states that men are often seen as dominant in our society. This can often pose problems in cross-sex friendships because the tw o individuals must find a way to feel as though they are equal. The fourth challenge described by OMeara (1989) is public relationships. He states that cross-sex friends often have to deal with how they are viewed by others, which results in them often having to defend the status of their friendship. Many find it difficult to accept the fact that a man and woman can have a platonic relationship. Movie Example A movie that accurately describes some of the problems that arise from cross-sex friendships is My Best Friends Wedding, starring Julia Roberts, Dermont Mulroney and Cameron Diaz. In this film Julia Roberts plays Julianne Porter a New York food critic who has a longtime male friend Michael ONeil (Dermont Mulroney). They have remained friends since college and lead what seemed to be a very normal platonic relationship. They talked often about relationships, family, and enjoyed doing many of the same activities together. That all changed one day when Michael called Julianne to tell her he had recently become engaged. While taking this information in she realizes she loves Michael herself and sets out to sabotage his wedding with only days before the ceremony. Her tactics fail and Julianne finally has to accept she has lost her love and longtime friend to another woman. Successes There are also reasons that cross-sex friendships are successful and rewarding relationships for both parties, although it is not as common as the problems and challenges that can arise from these friendships. Some researchers have proposed that male individuals initiate cross-sex friendships to have access to sex and females initiate cross-sex friendships for protection (Bleske-Rechek Buss, 2001). Some cross-sex friends invite sexuality into the friendship. The added sexual dimension in a friendship can be a pleasant aspect within the relationship, but can also cause many problems if you are not careful. Cross-sex relationships are valued because they provide a chance for men to develop friendships with women because they are looking for more emotional and physical closeness. They may want to develop a friendship in search for more self-disclosure and more conversation about personal subjects. Chances are they do not experience this within their male friendships because they assume their male friends will be of little assistance or they fear seeming effeminate. Dee?s view of the world and her feelings about developing her own sovereign identity are foreign to Maggie and her mother. The mother has lived her whole life in a manner that Dee simply does not wish to live hers. The mother shows some recognition of this as the story opens and she describes her own life and childhood and compares those of her two girls. The daughters, then, represent to their mother opposing forces in regards to socioeconomic and educational standards of living. Through out her recollection of the story, the girls? mother learns to accept and even appreciate the fact that she and Maggie are resigned to living the only way they have ever known, while Dee has chosen to abandon that legacy and sees it only as a way of life to be honored, not lived. The author?s decision to narrate the story from a first-person point of view allows the reader to gain insight into the mother?s struggle that wouldn?t have been available otherwise. Throughout the beginning of the story, the mother describes both her views of herself and of her daughters. She sees Dee as being superior to both she and Maggie. Dee always gets what she wants, whether it be through her family... ...ally important in life. Dee will always want more. She will never experience the pure joy that Maggie and her mother now share in the knowledge that they may not be the richest or the brightest or the best looking folks, but they are satisfied with what they have. They have already gone their separate ways. Instead, it is a new day for Maggie and her mother. They now share a love and understanding that they had not known prior to these events. The Spring and Autumn Free Online Research Papers Spring is an enlightening season in which there is great anticipation of the events it brings. It is my favorite season and one that I feel most connected with. It is like a yearly reawakening of the body and mind that coincides with the Earth waking up from a deep sleep. During this season, historically neighbors are busy putting away their snow blowers and bringing out their lawn mowers. Kids are packing away their snowsuits and sleds and bringing out their new bikes and shorts. The birds return flapping their wings in the sky as if to get everyones attention. Along with the return of the birds, all the other animals awaken from a long slumber, many caring for bundles of joy that a few months ago were distant dreams. I am aware of their presence through traces of deer tracks in the mud and the loud chattering of squirrels among the trees. The snow from the previous season melts its way back to the Beaver Creek. The sound of water flowing down stream and brushing against it’ s banks, interrupting central flow, is easing. The wind is calm and, at a slow pace, carries away the redundant remnants of the dreary winter. The distinct smell of melted snow fills the air as it seeps into the dirt, creating mud. The sun bounces off my bald head, making me feel warm on the inside. It is a comforting feeling like the one you get after a long, hot shower. It is the spring season in which time flies and man’s feeble attempts at slowing her down, are futile at best. â€Å"Slow down children playing† signs pop up on every residential street. I wish someone could tell Mother Nature to slow down for her children are playing. The naà ¯ve baby rabbits that inhabit my back yard in the early spring seem to be savvy adults by the turning of Autumn’s first leaves. It seams as if my son has just completed his last homework assignment in June and we are already shopping for school clothes. The bulbs that I planted have bloomed and are preparing for the long winter ahead before I have truly had the opportunity to enjoy the colors and smells that only God could have blessed them with. In the Fall, everything that we were so busy finding now goes back into its boxes and rests until Spring finds its way back to The Beaver Valley. Still, there is very much going on. Neighbors talk of the events of the past month and the plans for the ones coming. They gather the last of their raspberries from their bushes in the backyard, which surround the now barren garden. The taste of the fully ripe fruits from the raspberry bushes is a sweet sensation, which gives the tongue reason to dance. The sun cools down again and quietly retreats. A cold chill meant to prepare us for what is to come blankets the Earth. I get goose bumps all over my body. The sky is still, as if preparing to shed its white tears. The birds leave shouting in the sky as though they are saying farewell, for now. And life as we know it slows to a snails pace. Even autumns own subjects begin to slow down like a Sunday sightseer with no destination in mind. The colorful leaves of the trees meander to the groun d with no sense of urgency and the first snow-flakes of the season march to their destination just as slow and methodical as an infantry bravely going to battle with the blistering winds singing its cadence. The bright sunny days of spring and summer that seemed to rush by have turned to dark gloomy days that never seem to end. With much fanfare we await the verdict of the groundhog in eager anticipation that the long cold dreary days will end. The Spring and Autumn are active seasons which often go unnoticed because they blend so well with the seasons before and after. Every season has a certain smell to me. It is the cold smell of Autumn that sends a certain sadness through my body. It is that time when I dread winters nearing, for then my warm memories become a sheet of white ice that sparkles only when touched by the sun. At this time, there is almost no human activity except for a young couple walking their dog or a family cross-country skiing. The trees stand bare, mounted against the mountains in the distance. It is white from top to bottom, colored only by the shadows of nature. There is almost no sound. The wind is the only present force. It hits my cheeks and paints them red while deep within I quiver. I try to breath it all in but it tingles my throat causing me to quickly press my lips together again. Still, I continue watching, taking small breaths. My ears freeze, but I am usually so consumed in thought of w hat the approaching season will bring that I hardly notice. With the coming of the next season, it is clear that winters stay is long overdue. As spring transitions from the slow stand still of winter to the flying time of Summer I go to lie on the crisp green grass, which quickly catches its breath before my human shadow disguises it. I feel the embrace of Mother Nature herself and I wonder what it is about this place that I have grown so attached to. Some days the clouds move with a vigor like that of an approaching storm. Other days, the clouds gather in the sky, occasionally changing their form as though they are performing a play for me. The wind is ever transforming here, changing its path when least expected. It caresses my face and body. The force is unaware of my presence. The sensation it brings keeps me there longer than I plan. The smell of freshly cut grass fills the air, not to mention the occasional smell of a neighbor barbecuing hamburgers and hot dogs, that finds its way to my nose. I am usually caught up in other thoughts to consciously notice the subtle smells of spring’s arrival. It is the sense o f well being that these smells trigger that jolt me into awareness. I hear the sounds of the elementary school children during their recess intertwined with the melody of the birds singing, and the flustering of the water, when they make their smooth landings in the pond behind me. The most welcoming sound at my place of peace is that of a friends voice. The voice that makes my stay worthwhile, makes it harder to leave. I lie down on the hill just before the range, admiring the town from a limited view. This is summer time near Beaver Falls just outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It is the fastest and most exciting of the four seasons but unfortunately leaves sooner than it comes.
